Inequality cannot reasonably arouse envy under either solitary production or barter, because if Barefoot wants more, he can get more; as much land as he could possibly work or enjoy remains in the common stock. When we graduate to a money economy the situation changes, because all of the earth is now taken. Barefoot could object because he has missed his chance to stake a claim. However, this would require him to withdraw his consent to the use of money, and he is no fool: despite the unequal division of the earth he is better off now than he was under barter. Some cause for envy may still be left if he is hindered from saving his earnings and eventually buying a plot of his own from Moneybags, but this objection can be eliminated by the implementation of Lockean Equity.
